JACOBS, LAZARUS
JACOBS, LAZARUS (c. 1709–1796), English glass manufacturer, producing the fine Bristol glass now much sought after. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and became head of the bristol Jewish community. Jacobs was responsible for the construction of the new synagogue in 1786. He was succeeded in his business by his son ISAAC JACOBS (1757 or 1758–1835 ) whose work, unlike that of his father, is signed, and is, therefore, more readily identifiable. He was appointed glass manufacturer to George III but ultimately met with business misfortunes. In 1809, Isaac was made a freeman of Bristol. -BIBLIOGRAPHY: Rubens, in: JHSET, 14 (1935–39), 106; C.
